In my paper, I analyse the existing curriculum on the subject of ecological education in Romanian schools, in order to offer some practical solutions that can be implemented in kindergarten, schools, universities and also during cultural events and fairs (that I also consider an important educating factor).
The abstract information taught at the higher levels of education dominate the curricula of our schools and universities, where pupils and students get very little practical knowledge ? either concerning a particular field of study, or on a more general level - like the one about ensuring a healthy life or a clean environment, and they end up ignoring really important issues.
The studies show that showing example works best together with explaining, especially at young age. And there is no difference between learning bad and destroying habits or beneficial ones; the effort is the same.
Kindergartens, schools and Universities in Romania have coffee machines with plastic cups, and organize their daily routine and especially events with lots of disposable plastics, and lots of PET-s, even if it is well known that disposable plastics became one of the biggest environmental problems, and some kinds, which can be avoided easily are banned in several countries. At most of the cultural events, concerts or fairs the situation is the same, even though this kind of events and institutions bring together a great number of people, and for young children their parents serve as a model to follow.
A solution would be for schools and universities to adopt practically- not just teach in theory - a good management of waste, meaning: to compost together in the school yard, getting the children involved, even in the kindergarten, to encourage serving lunch in their own recipients, to teach and encourage children to wash them and to bring water from springs, students to drink coffee from paper cups, or their own thermos, this all leading in time to more sensitive and careful people.
The next generation will adopt the habits of adults of today and becoming aware of these problems would make them search and find solutions, instead of passing the responsibilities to another. This is very important because little children are interested in everything and they learn just as easily the bad and destructive things and the good ones. Since this is about their future, most of all, they should be informed of the consequences.
The paper describes the results of experimental classes of ecology, workshops, clubs for young moms and kids that I organized, as well as practical methods of teaching that can be implemented in any kindergarten and school. There are also a number of ideas that can be used for cultural events, shops and fairs.
