As a member of the European Union, Romania is facing numerous challenges related to the effects of the global economic crisis involving austerity measures, the occurrence of climate changes affecting the sustainable agriculture, important changes in the dynamics of labour market, an unprecedented wave of migration - a phenomenon that, without an integrated approach, could lead to the emergence of some extreme social attitude etc. This is why, the best solutions have to be found leading to the acceleration of the economic growth.
Because production is essential for the development of any economy, and agriculture is one of the sectors that was emphasized in the Competitiveness Strategy of Romania, this paper intends to analyse issues connected to the contribution of agriculture to the sustainable development.
Some of the measurers that could contribute to the sustainable integration of the Romanian agriculture in compliance with the EU standards involve the adopting of the European agricultural model, that has viable operating structures, is close to the market, concurrently with the rural development and environmental protection, support for the producers for the adaptation of agriculture to the effects of climate changes, because they influence the amount and variability of agricultural production and livestock, setting-up of sales channels for the products, development of niche agro-food production, as well as of the organic and traditional products in the area where the conditions are favourable, protection of the designations of products, of networks and of typical Romanian processing procedures on the EU or third country markets, by observing the food safety standards and their proper promotion
