The paper presents the results of mineralogical and technological research of tailings produced during processing of rare-metal columbite ore of the prospective Zashikhinskoe deposit. The grain size analysis of a tailings sample showed that the most part of the material is represented by fine-grained particles with 53.3% yield of size fraction -0.045 mm. Mineral composition of the tailings is mainly represented by quartz, albite and microcline. Total content of minor minerals, such as muscovite, columbite, cryolite, fluorite, riebeckite, zircon, iron oxides and others did not exceed 5%. Lithium is concentrated in micas, which were identified as polylitionite and zinnwaldite by X-ray phase analysis. Total content of lithium minerals in the sample was 2.84%. The content of Li2O in the sample did not exceed 0.083% with the maximum distribution in size fraction -0.045 mm. The most part of lithium micas is represented by particles smaller than 0.071 mm in the form of pseudohexagonal plates. The recovery of such particles from the tailings presents certain difficulties. To determine the potential of separation of lithium concentrates from the tailings, technological studies of flotation and magnetic separation of this material were carried out. It has been revealed that the highest separation rates are achieved using a mixture of tall oils and Phospholan PE 65 reagent as a collector at pH 7.3-7.4. Further separation of the rough concentrate by high-intensity magnetic separation provide for production of lithium concentrate with a Li2O content of 3.26% and its recovery of about 39%.
