High-resolution imagery guarantees excellent quality of coastal topographic surveys. Alongside the rapid progress of remote sensing, digital photogrammetry and image processing in recent years using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provide outstanding opportunities for mapping the coastal zone, including the coverage of difficult-to-access areas, as is the Northern Bulgarian coast. Both spatial planning and integrated coastal zone management require highly accurate and up-to-date geodata, being among the main reasons for chosen budget drones for shoreline surveying, along with the low cost of the related field campaigns. The Bulgarian coast as a whole has not yet been regularly surveyed to correctly detect and analyze the ongoing shoreline dynamics and morphological change trends. This work aims to demonstrate the potential of combining UAVs and echo-sounding data for land and seabed mapping of Dobrudzha coastal region between cape Sivriburun and cape Kaliakra. Parts of the coast are highly and moderately sensitive to erosion, necessitating a seasonal very high-resolution mapping of shoreline changes. In the last four years, a seasonal survey of the aforementioned coastal segment has started. A digital surface model with a resolution of 20 cm for the whole coastal segment as well as a finer one with 6 cm cell size for the coastal area between cape Sivriburun and cape Kaliakra were derived after Structure for Motion data processing (SfM). The high quality of acquired geospatial data allowed detailed UAV-based shoreline detection and study of the present-day morphological pattern of the coastal system to the north of cape Kaliakra. The coastal landforms were classified according to the type of coast as erosional (abrasional), erosional-depositional and depositional. Based on the bathymetric model, 33 submarine coastal seabedforms in front of Dobrudzha Plain were divided into two classes according to modern seafloor geomorphic processes: erosional (abrasion) and depositional.
