Humanity vision about steadily increasing its quality of life has had as a consequence the maintained search for available odds in order to design various energy supply systems based on different energy resources. The innovative thinking way of human beings has always been also driving the field of shaping more efficient energy supply systems with less unwanted environmental impacts. Conventional energy supply systems, especially based on fossil fuels, have been since long applied, their impacts being especially perceivable on environment, but also on society. In the meanwhile has become clear that the usage of fossil fuels for operating energy supply systems is not representing a long term solution. Renewable energy resources, as water, wind and solar energy, have to be more used in the future by taking into consideration their sustainable usage odds, a holistic analysis and assessment being needed to be carried out by applying methods and instruments of Technology Assessment. In this paper proposal a case study for a Romanian region in the Southern part of the country, so-called Oltenia region, will be presented, being known as the lignite mining site of the country. After debating and emphasizing the relevance of technical aspects besides environmental related criteria with regard of energy supply systems, in this case study, the operating efficacy of power plants, and the environmental impact of lignite based energy supply systems by calculating corresponding environmental footprints, future usage odds of renewable energy resources in considered region will be emphasized, assuring by this the basics for shaping sustainable energy supply systems on regional level.
