In addition to the traffic load, the temperature also has a significant effect on the course of stresses in cement concrete slabs. It is the load of temperature changes that is often underestimated. Recently, there have been significant changes in climatic conditions and increasingly frequent extremes (especially high temperatures in the summer months and extreme fluctuations during the day), which affect the behavior of road structures and the basic characteristics affecting the stress of cement concrete pavements. Changes in the average slab temperature in the annual (or daily) cycle cause stresses that depend on many factors, such as: the magnitude of the temperature change, the coefficient of thermal expansion, the modulus of elasticity of the cement concrete, the bulk density of the cement concrete and the amount of friction on the subbase. In the event of excessive loading and exhaustion of the tensile strength of the concrete, the cement concrete cover may be undesirably damaged. The slab withstands stress as long as the strength of the material is not exceeded. If exceeded, the already mentioned large-scale faults occur. Therefore, it is necessary to know and monitor the course of temperature in cement concrete (CC) slabs.
