The magnesium oxychloride cement (MOC) as an alternative to commonly used Portland cement (PC) has been intensively studied in the past decade. Compared to PC it is more environmentally sustainable and it can be considered as CO2-neutral due to the low calcination temperature of the raw materials and its ability to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. The objective of this paper was to develop a composite material based on MOC, containing partially oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (partially oxidized MWCNTs) in order to improve its resistance to water, which has been previously proven as very poor. For the partially oxidized MWCNTs, their chemical, phase, thermal and structural properties were studied using X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and simultaneous thermal analysis. These analyses helped to determine the optimal content of the additive in order to form a high-performance construction material applicable in various conditions. After the analysis, a sample containing 0.5 wt. % of the partially oxidized MWCNTs was prepared and analyzed in terms of its structural, mechanical, and hygric properties. Also, a reference sample, which did not contain the partially oxidized MWCNTs was prepared in order to compare its properties to the properties of the prepared nanocomposite. Results showed that the MWCNT addition to MOC matrix is a promising approach for the synthesis of high-performance green building material.
