The installation and maintenance of equipment intended for use in potentially explosive environments requires specific knowledge and qualifications for the personnel who commissions and subsequently maintain such equipment. When installing and maintaining electrical equipment, situations may arise which may in turn lead to an unacceptable level of risk with regarding to the activation of ignition sources of potentially explosive atmospheres in their immediate vicinity, due to the failure to comply the principles of explosion protection.
The principles of explosion protection differ from one type of equipment to another, and they can be combined, but only if the clearly defined principles in the specific literature are observed. There are also situations when two or more principles of protection are not compatible in ensuring a level of safety appropriate to the classification of the area endangered by the presence of a potentially explosive atmosphere.
This paper presents real situations discovered by the authors in their assessment work, at different installations intended for operation in potentially explosive environments, with the highlighting of the nonconformities in each presented case.
