Along with pedestrian traffic, urban cycling is an ecological, social way of moving that does not generate pollution or noise and is good for health. In this context, more attention should be paid to the design of cycling infrastructure – because if we want more cyclists on city streets, then we need to provide them with adequate, fast and safe infrastructure. Infrastructure works for cycles must not affect spaces intended for pedestrians but must be located in the space used by motorized means of transport, aiming in this way to balance all relevant modes of travel, while promoting major changes towards more efficient models and in close relationship with the protection of the environment.
Within the planning and design activities of the streets, the national and local objectives regarding the viability of the cities must be considered, thus aiming for a more balanced analysis of the whole necessary regarding the division of the street space. In this situation, it will be necessary, especially in urban areas, to implement a prioritization of individual traffic in favor of pedestrians, cyclists or public transport. Thus, the main objective for the construction of road is to balance the different modes of transport and to ensure the safety of traffic participants, especially members of vulnerable groups. |
