Abstract

The пїЅameli Formation extensively outcrops in Denizli-Mu?la and Antalya (SW Turkey). In this study, the stratigraphy and ostracod assemblages of the пїЅameli Formation was studied. The пїЅameli formation is first defined in the пїЅameli Basin (Denizli) which is one of the grabens formed in Pliocene. The пїЅameli Formation consists mainly of lacustrine sandstone, marl and claystone and shows prominent terrestrial sedimentary features. In the field, the formation was observed as two different facies: Facies 1: dispersive, bioturbated, yellowish-gray colored travertine; Facies 2: yellow, light gray colored marl and claystone. Microscopic examination of thin section samples from the first facies revealed that the travertines consist of ooid-containing packstones or oomicrites. Micropaleontological examinations of the samples collected from the second section showed an ostracod fauna consisting of adult individuals with thick crusted shells, carapaces number is more than the number of valve, and occasional traces of deformation were observed. In these assemblages Cyprideis pannonica (Mehes) is the dominant species howeversome ostracod species such as Cyprideis torosa (Jones), Candona parallela pannonica (Zalanyi), Heterocypris sp, Ilyocypris sp, Cyclocypris ovum (Jurine), Eucypris virens (Jurine), Eucypris sp, Lymnocythere sp and Candona sp were also described. The stratigraphic position of the пїЅameli formation as well as the age range of the ostracods indicate that this formation deposited in the Late Miocene-Pliocene underlacustrine environmental conditions. In addition, micritic texture of traverterns and low valve/carapace ratio of ostracodes indicated a low sedimentation rate.
