Abstract

One of the oldest geographical regions in Romania, the subcarpathian zone situated between the Ialomita and Prahova rivers, having important natural resources, has generated a geodemographical evolution of the human settlements different from other areas in the country, especially with the help of economical development. Starting from the 18th century until the second half of the 20th century, accented economical initiatives are observed. These are related to the exploitation and processing of oil resources, the expansion of manufacturers and markets, the building of infrastructure and the appearance of several different new industrial enterprises. All these factors have determined the population growth. In the 1989-2008 transition period, the human settlements situated in the studied zone manifest a slow decrease in population numbers, determined by the reduction of the birth rate and by the growth in numbers of people that left the area to find better paid working places, especially outside the country. The most emplasiyed demographical regress took place in urban areas (from 220.509 people in 1990 to 200.473 people in 2008), expecially in the cities Moreni or C\^ampina and less in the western cities, Fieni or Pucioasa. The population numbers have an acute decreasing ratio in small and isolated villages that are situated at a considerable distance from other towns and access ways; larger villages positioned in favorable zones have registred population growth. In conclusion, the economical transition has imposed different tendencies in the geodemographical evolution of the studied inhabited regions, in urban and rural spaces, as well as in each locality itself.
