USAGE OF SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEM FOR ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL MANAGEMENT AND REVIVAL OF THE GREAT DESERT OF IRAN

Abstract

Iran is a country with an area of 1,648,198 Km 2 in the Middle East. When it comes to sun, there are 300 days of pure high UV sunshine in 95% of the country. There is a triangular great desert from center to the East of Iran, which due to its position receives a large amount of solar energy. Because this area is enclosed by the high ridge Alburz Mountains in the North, the Zagros Mountains in the West and the Makran Mountains in the East, there is no climate variability and also its geographi cal and environmental conditions are exceptional. However, according to the historical evidence, people lived in prosperity in this region since 5000 years BC. Archeological findings show specific techniques were used to live in harmony with the rough nature and in fact many regions were along the largest commercial way (the Silk Road) in this region. With respect to the historical records, our objectives in this project include finding suitable conditions for the usage of solar energy technology, recovery of the desert for settling people, and developing the tourism industry. The potential development of Iranian deserts is comparable to Taklamakan in China. The experience from Taklamakan would be helpful in the progress of the Iranian deserts. Initially, the purpose of the study will be the introduction of development stages as a tourist attraction site and eventually sw itching the region to a place for permanent residence. This study uses the Sarvestan village as an experimental site, which is located in the desert margins and has been abandoned due to lack of water and electricity. To recover this rural area, which is a small part of th e desert, five scientific phases are defined. These stages, respectively, will start with initial studies of geology and geophysics, hydrology, surface water drainage, estimation of green plant's development, and eventually will finish with creation of a sustainable en vironment based on the solar energy system.
