PROSPECTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS OF THE USE OF LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS AS BUNKER FUEL IN THE ARCTIC REGION OF RUSSIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-11-20, Katysheva, Elena)

At the present day, requirements to the quality of marine fuel and to the volumes of air pollutant emissions become stricter for shipping in the Arctic Region. This article states that one of the most important ways to follow the emission limits is switching the ice-rated vessels to liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel. As compared with oil fuels, LNG has the superior calorific value and the best physical characteristic. It is noted that Russia has a number of opportunities to apply LNG both for supply of water and...

METHODICAL APPROACHES FOR FEASIBILITY STUDY OF POTENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF ARCTIC MINERAL DEPOSITS

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, Melnikov, N., Giliarova, A., Kalashnik, A., O.Churik)

The work given has been aimed at consideration of methodical approaches for the feasibility study of perspective in mineral deposits development, and based on it, preliminary ranking of criteria which should be applied relative to the Arctic solid mineral deposits. Authors used a formal logic method (analysis synthesis). It was revealed that both the domestic and foreign approaches cannot be applied directly for the feasibility studies of the Arctic solid mineral deposits because they consider the arctic condition...

SPECIFIC STRUCTURAL FEATURES OF ZOOPLANKTON OF POLYGONAL POND (LENA RIVER DELTA, RUSSIA, ARCTIC)

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, Nigamatzyanova, G., Frolova, L.)

This study is devoted to the investigation of zooplankton biodiversity and their adaptation to the short growing season of polygonal pond, located in the largest Arctic delta - the delta of the Lena River (Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia). Samples were obtained within the Russian-German project "Expedition Lena" (August 2013, June-August 2014). Investigated polygonal pond with thickets of macrophytes shallow, well-oxygenated, weakly mineralized with low conductivity, slightly alkaline pH. The pond freezes in w...

STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE RUSSIAN ARCTIC: SOCIOECOLOGICAL APPROACH

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, Ilinova, A., Dmitrieva, D.)

Russia is one of the most important players in the Arctic Zone with significant economic, security and political interests on these territories. This is primarily because of significant natural resources, in particular oil and gas, in the Russian Arctic. The objective of this paper is to define the main prospects of strategic development of the Russian Arctic zone, and to offer socioecological approach to its development. Arctic has considerable strategic importance to the Russian economy. Strategic development of...
