With the decrease of conventional oil production, the role of heavy hydrocarbons in the world energy balance will continue to increase in the near future. Heavy oil and natural bitumen as two of the alternative sources are perhaps the most readily available to meet short- and long-term needs. Bitumen deposits in Permian sediments in the Volga-Ural region are interesting as sources of unconventional oil. The reservoir rocks in the bituminous deposits are sand and sandstone of varying degrees of strength.
