CAN BIOGAS CONTRIBUTE TO PURE HYDROGEN COMBUSTION?

(STEF92 Technology, 2024-11-01, Isabel Amez, Blanca Castells, David Bolonio, David León, Marcelo León)

Hydrogen combustion is presented as a potential solution to cover the heat demand with renewable energies. However, current technologies do not allow the combustion of pure hydrogen and it must often be mixed with fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide (CO2) has proven to be useful for stabilizing hydrogen combustion, as has methane (CH4). Therefore, this research proposes the use of biogas as a stabilizer of pure hydrogen combustion. For this purpose, experimental tests were carried out, burning a lean biogas (BG 50% CH4) ...

FLAME ANALYSIS: UNDERSTANDING THE COMBUSTION OF RENEWABLE FUELS

(STEF92 Technology, 2024-11-01, Blanca Castells, David León, Isabel Amez, Roberto Paredes, David Bolonio)

Due to the increase of global concerns over environmental degradation, the search for sustainable energy sources has led to increased utilization of renewable fuels such as biogas and biodiesel. Despite their advantages in terms of sustainability, challenges persist in their efficient utilization. An easy method to approach these challenges is addressing the characteristics of flames produced during these fuels- combustion. This study aims to address these challenges by developing a MATLAB-based flame analysis too...

LIFE-CYCLE ANALYSIS OF FIREWORKS: ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT AND IMPROVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

(STEF92 Technology, 2024-11-01, David León, David Bolonio, Isabel Amez, Roberto Paredes, Blanca Castells)

The increasing focus on sustainability necessitates the examination of environmental impacts across all sectors, including pyrotechnics. Pollutant emissions have been extensively studied, but information on sustainability in the pyrotechnics sector is scarce. Thus, a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to study two widely used pyrotechnic devices: bangers and shells was carried out, in order to analyze the environmental footprint and detect points where action can be taken. Using SimaPro software and the Product Environment...

REDUCING CEMENT INDUSTRY EMISSIONS: SYNTHETIC GAS FROM CARBON DIOXIDE AND GREEN HYDROGEN

(STEF92 Technology, 2024-11-01, David Bolonio, Isabel Amez, Blanca Castells, David León, Garcia Franco)

The actual climate crisis is forcing the development of new energy sources that mitigate the negative effects of the climate change. Because of that, the use of fossil fuels is expected to be significantly reduced in the coming decades. In this scenario, the production of renewable fuels that reduce the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) is one of the main world challenges. The present study focuses on synthetic gas production using carbon dioxide from the cement industry, and green hydrogen, simulating the process us...

INFLUENCE OF THE ADDITION OF HYDROGEN ON THE FLAMMABILITY INTERVALS OF THE METHANE, AIR AND CO2 MIXTURES

(STEF92 Technology, 2019-06-20, Isabel Amez)

By adding H2 to CH4 the combustion characteristics improve considerably. The flammability characteristics of the CH4 are most well-known, but the CH4 enriched with H2 has a completely different behaviour regarding the flammability and the explosiveness. The understanding of the flammability of such mixture in the air is crucial to allow their safe use in industry. Lower and upper flammability limits are one of the most important parameters at the time of characterizing and handle flammable gases. This study is foc...
