The onshore Thermaikos basin is the northwestern extension of the offshore Thermaikos basin, located at the area west of Thessaloniki, in northern Greece. It consists a sedimentary basin, where thick sediments dating from Paleogene to Quaternary are overlaying the older ophiolite and deep-sea Mesozoic formations of Axios geotectonic zone.
