REMEDIATION MEASURES TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FAILURE THE DAM OF THE MINING TAILINGS POND

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Ivan Slávik)

A mining tailings pond is an engineering construction used for the safe deposition of unexploitable mining waste from mining facilities. This contribution presents a stability analysis of a mining tailings pond. The credibility of the results, when considering the stability of a tailings pond, is conditioned by the aptness of the computing model of the tailings pond, which actually describes not only the constructional arrangement, but also the properties of the geomaterials of the construction of an tailings pond...

ANALYSIS OF INTERFACE SHEAR STRENGTH BETWEEN A COHESIONLESS SOIL AND A BLACK WOVEN GEOTEXTILE

(STEF92 Technology, 2020-09-20, Jakub Stacho, Ivan Slávik, Monika Súľovská)

The paper deals with the laboratory testing of the shear strength of the soil-geotextile interface. Two samples of soil were tested, i.e., coarse-grained poorly graded sand and fine poorly graded ash. The soils were reinforced using the Thrace WG80 black woven geotextile, which is suitable for road, railway, and geo-bag applications. The tests were executed using a large-size direct shear test apparatus. The shear strength of the interface was determined using the large-size direct shear test apparatus. The ground...

GEOTECHNICAL PROPERTIES OF NEOGENE SUBSOIL OF THE DANUBE RIVER IN BRATISLAVA

(STEF92 Technology, 2020-09-20, Ivan Slávik)

In the framework of reconstruction of the Old Bridge, two exploratory wells were made in the channel of the Danube River. The depth of the exploratory wells was up to 55 m below the modified terrain around the bridge pillars. The role of the exploratory wells was verifying the thickness of Quaternary sediments and simultaneously verifying Neogene soils properties located in the channel of the Danube River. The exploratory wells verified that the Neogene subsoil of the Danube River is predominantly made up of silty...

VOLUME CHANGES OF SOILS AS A SECONDARY CAUSE OF FAILURE OF THE RETENTION RESERVOIRS

(STEF92 Technology, 2019-06-20, Ivan Slávik)

The paper analyzes failures of retention reservoirs of waste water located at the premises of an important power-engineering facility. Waste water retention reservoirs have been broken during their existence. The character and extent of the failures have caused serious concern to the operator about the loss of tightness of the retention reservoirs at which the entire operation would be seriously compromised. For the design of effective and functional remediation measures, it was necessary to clearly define the ext...

SEAL DEFECT OF IMPOUNDMENT DAM SYSTEM AND ITS REMEDIATION

(STEF92 Technology, 2018-06-20, Ivan Slávik)

The paper focuses on seal defect of dam system of an impoundment with deposition of calcareous sludge. The seal defect of the impoundment dam system, consisting of a homogeneous ground dam, occurred due to its underflow by desludged water. This paper lists causes of the underflow at the dam system, based on analysis of the original engineering-geologic survey, construction method of the dam body, floating method at the impoundment and additional engineering-geologic survey. The primary cause of the defect is prese...

GEOTECHNICAL PROPERTIES OF MINE WASTE SEDIMENT IN IMPOUNDMENT

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, Ivan Slavik)

Disposal of increasing waste production in mining is currently a serious problem of civilization. The most common way to dispose of mining waste is storing them on impoundments. The hydraulic transport is advantageous from the standpoint of service and perhaps economy too, but the geotechnical properties of the resulting sediment are poor especially when saturated. For the design and construction of safe dumps with minimum impact on the environment the knowledge of the geotechnical properties of sedimented mining ...
