ENHANCING VOLATILE FATTY ACIDS YIELDS FROM WASTE ACTIVATED SLUDGE TREATED BY HYBRID OXIDATION WITH OZONE AND SODIUM PERCARBONATE

(STEF92 Technology, 2025-12-27, Diana Puiu, Marcela Popa, Laurentiu Dinu, Mihai Nita-Lazar, Lucian Alexandru Constantin)

The volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are a valuable source of hydrogen on fuel industry or precursors of polyhydroxyalkanoates, a highly in trend and non-toxic bioplastics. However, the VFAs generation costs are expensive. Therefore, this study proposed a recycling solution of the waste activated sludge (WAS) into VFAs by non-conventional treatment with tandem steps of energic and slow oxidation in alkaline media by hybrid treatment with ozone and sodium percarbonate (SPC), followed by semi-aerobic fermentation at 22oC...

CHARACTERIZING THE MEMBRANE CONCENTRATE FROM LEACHATE TREATMENT: HAZARDOUSNESS EVALUATION AND ITS POTENTIAL TO LANDFILL RECIRCULATION

(STEF92 Technology, 2023-12-15, Lidia Kim, Razvan Laurentiu Dinu, Adriana Cuciureanu, Georgiana Cernica, Valeriu Robert Badescu)

One of the main challenges in treating landfill leachate through membranes is managing the resulting concentrate. Depending on the membrane installation's performance and the stored waste's characteristics, significant quantities of concentrate may remain after leachate treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to identify an optimal disposal or treatment method for it. In the European Union List of Waste, the membrane concentrates are associated with leachates and are classified as either hazardous or non-hazardous w...

MUNICIPAL ORGANIC WASTE COMPOSTING IN ROMANIA? RESOURCES AVAILABILITY AND RECENT ADVANCES

(STEF92 Technology, 2023-12-15, Elena Elisabeta Manea, Costel Bumbac, Laurențiu Dinu, Valeriu Robert Badescu, Ionescu Ioana)

Composting municipal organic waste is important for several reasons, including greenhouse gas emissions reduction, soil health improvement, nutrients recycle, waste reduction, costs reduction (by reducing the waste volumes, the handling costs are decreased). Information on the practices of municipal organic waste composting in Romania is limited, thus a comprehensive evaluation of the limiting factors and current solution was carried out. According to the European Environment Agency, Romania has made progress in o...
