SEDIMENTOLOGY AND MINERALOGY OF LATE MIOCENE PALEOSOLS AND CALCRETE RICH SEDIMENTS IN THE WESTERN PART OF CENTRAL ANOTOLIAN VOLCANIC PROVINCE (CAVP), TURKEY

(SGEM Scientific GeoConference, 2008, A. Gurel, I. E. Kerey, S. Uzcan)

The Dogantarla-Aksaray area is situated in western part of the CAVP. This province contains nine (9) different ignimbrite levels, for which a Late Miocene age is indicated by vertebrates as well as K/Ar ages of 11 to 2.8 Ma (Viereck-Goette et al 2006). However, most paleosol and calcrete occur within the interval of 7.6 to 2.8 Ma (Gurel and Kadir, 2006). Among this ignimbrite levels, fluvial and lacustrine sediments are found, so called Bayramhacili Formation of western CAVP consist of alternation of typical red c...

STRATIGRAPHIC FEATURES AND GEOTECTONIC EVOLUTION OF THE SOUTH EDGE (NARMAN-OLTU-OLUR) OF EASTERN PONTIDS (NORTHEAST TURKEY)

(SGEM Scientific GeoConference, 2008, C. Bozkus, I. E. Kerey, G. Tuncer)

The southern edge of Eastern Pontids is covered by rock units belonging to two distinct continental crusts that reunited through a Late Upper Cretaceous-Eocene suture zone. In the north of the Suture zone (Olur), Paleozoic aged acid magmatits (Permo- Carboniferous) constitute the continental crust basement. On this basement, there is uninterrupted marine sediment which has disconformably developed between Upper- Lias Late Cretaceous. These sediments have deposited under the conditions of Lias- Lower Malm basic vol...

MINERALOGICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGES IN PARENT ROCKS AND IN SOIL ECOSYSTEMS (MAZMILI DAGI, ADANA, TURKEY)

(SGEM Scientific GeoConference, 2007, A. Gurel, E. Kerey, A. Lermi)

In this study, the region of AladaДџlar-MazmД±lД± (Adana) has been selected as research area and covering on area of 95 square kilometers. A number of anatical methods including Attarberg, XRD, XRF and ICP have been employed to characterize representative samples collected from the soils developed partially weathered country rocks with respect to their chemical and mineralogical contents. Soil horizons did not well developed on the limesstone and ultramafic parent roks that include mainly harzburgite-dunite, ophyo...

A STUDY ON ACTIVITY OF THE NORTHERN BRANCH OF THE NORTH ANATOLIAN FAULT THE 17TH AUGUST 1999 MARMARA EARTHQUAKE

(SGEM Scientific GeoConference, 2005, E. Kerey, S. Sen)

This study aims at understanding the activity of northern branch of the North Anatolian Fault. The AvcД±lar and adjacent areas were chosen as a study area as the Marmara Earthquake had caused severe damage and fatalities in Avcilar. We carried out a fieldwork in the area and found out surface fractures. We then integrated in to our map existing seismological-seismic and damaged distribution data. We propose that the damage to the W of Д°stanbul, especially in Avcilar was caused mainly by re-activation of younger f...
