Pyrite is one of the main rock-forming components for Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous black shale Bazhenov Formation. The correlation between pyrite and total organic carbon is found to be relatively high; however, some deficiencies of this hypothesis are discussed. Interlayers with high pyrite and low total carbon contents are encountered in the transition zone where the Bazhenov Fm. grades into Podachimov pack and into the underlying Georgiev Fm.
