The challenges raised by climate changes are diverse and unpredictable to the extent that makes them hard to manage after the onset. Under such conditions the trends assessment is a valuable approach, which enables efficient preparation to the expected effects and impacts. The process of adaptation provides possibility to reduce possible losses and create background for some benefits from changing climate. A variety of solutions and strategies for adapting urban areas to climate changes is already available for analysis and consideration. Still, each city is a separate case with a set of peculiarities and developing plan for adaptation involves searching for solutions, fitting the exact case. This calls for combination of analytical work and design thinking, which can yield efficient solutions based on the available experience and creative rethinking. The paper presents consideration of three possible strategies of urban area adaptation to climate changes, formulated via solution-focused approach. The methodology of the strategies analysis and comparison is based on factorial assessment and aims to demonstrate the potential of design thinking in developing long term plans with changing initial and target parameters. The factors affecting the efficiency of solutions produced for adaptation plans of cities were considered as well as the interactions between these factors, which form a specific working environment for the design of adaptation. The variations in the role of factors for different types of solutions do exist, but the design thinking has proved to be important in any application.
