The paper aims to identify the availability of water sources for water supply of local irrigation systems. Where the location of the land involved in the works is located at a large distance from the surface water sources, the only viable option is the use of water from the shallow water table. The identification, delimitation and characterization of underground water bodies is done in accordance with the specific methodology developed within the National Institute of Hydrology And Water Management, based on hydrogeological studies supporting the implementation in Romania of the provisions of the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC and the guidelines developed within the Common Strategy for the Implementation of the Water Framework Directive. Benefiting from the advantages offered by the programs of the Establishment of Irrigation Systems funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, farmers and their associative forms used these underground water bodies as the source of water supply for the newly established local irrigation systems.
