In the past decades Romania?s forest habitats suffered from human activity impact, resulting in loss of biodiversity and ecosystems services, thus highlighting the need for improved conservation measures. In 2008 the IUCN initiated a global Red List of ecosystems (Resolution 4.020, IV World Conservation Congress in Barcelona). The IUCN Red List of Ecosystems is planned to be a standard for assessing the status of ecosystems, which is applicable at local, national, regional and global level. In this article highlights the proposed methodology in our country and presents the scientific arguments of using certain indicators. A number of eight criteria and four categories of threat were identified and selected for reliable assessment of the current state of Romanian forest habitats. To establish the categories of threat a starting point for these categories was the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The proposed method will provide information on the types of data necessary to monitor habitat status: estimates of area, measures of ecological function in virgin forests and degraded habitats and quantification of the severity of threats. The improved methodology will give authorities a new tool to help conservation, management, and restoration of endangered forest habitats.
