Annually natural resources are disappearing more and more, particularly it concerned forest resources. Furniture, houses, carpentry and etc. are made from wood. Scientists gradually try to find options for replacing forest resources, produce products from other materials, but forest areas are declining. every year. For conservation and rational forest usage, it is necessary to change needs for certain assortments and harvesting of natural wood in the future, and it will be achieved by forest consumption optimization. Optimization will be possible only if the requirements for wood products will be changed. Wood is a complex and unique material and it is not possible to find a pair of trees that are identical in internal structure and location of defects. Therefore, quality problem has always been relevant for enterprises. Sawn timber are sorted according to their quality and purpose. The problem of wood products sorting is still little investigated. The current standards for technical requirements for sawn timber quality are evaluated by the degree of saturation with defects on the face sides and edges of the board, i.e, based on secondary characteristics, related with the strength parameters. This approach is used for visual quality control and it is not acceptable for the creation of automatic sorting system, since none of the known introscopy methods allows to identify all standardized defects of wood and processing defects. Recent previous theoretical studies in quality of sawn timber have shown that the purpose of the product should be taken as a basis for a new approach of quality assessment. The main indicator for sawn timber sorting based on the purpose is the internal heterogeneity of the board, which was not previously studied either theoretically or experimentally. This article presents the results of experimental studies, considering an internal heterogeneity of sawmill products as a proposed basis for the class evaluation. The relationship of classes for each of the four sides of the cross-section of a single board was considered. The Spearman rank correlation coefficient was used as a criterion for the tightness of relation. The information obtained can be used to improve quality standard system for sawn timber and will be useful for technology and equipment development for the rejection-sorting process.
