Numerical modeling of vortex induced motions appears to be one of primary objectives of offshore constructions design. The flow around structure elements with certain elongated geometry shape as pipes, risers, mooring lines, oil rig legs etc., causes vortex induction, which in turn could lead to negative side effects such as cross motion or even to structural damage. The vibration process modeling in advance could allow the structures design and production without extra margins of safety and therefore the final price of project will be significantly reduced. In this work a new look at the VIM (Vortex Induced Motions) is proposed as a source of natural energy. As a new objective, the mini Device for Utilization of Vortex Energy is introduced. The device is designed to convert potentially harmful VIM into electric power. It is demonstrated, that this type of construction for harvesting of ecologically clean energy can be used as in ocean environment as well as in open river flows with relatively low surface water velocity. The flow past cylinder close to the free surface is considered by using of VOF-FVM numerical simulations as well as towing tank tests. The submergence ratio, Froude and Reynolds numbers have been varied in certain ranges, to assess the free surface influence on the devise. Promising initial results for CFD and EFD validations have been obtained, considering the strong non-linearity pre-determined by wave breaking phenomena.
