Conversion of vegetable oils and fats are of the great attention in the last decades. The main processes used in the triglyceride processing are transesterification, hydrolysis, hydrodeoxygenation, and hydrogenation. The last two reactions can be concerned with hydrotreatment processes, allowing the formation of hydrocarbons, fatty alcohols, and fatty aldehydes. These compounds can be used as fuel components, intermediated for the synthesis of surfactants, fragrances, pharmaceutical etc. In the current work, the selective hydrogenation of carboxylic group of stearic acid was studied. Novel catalysts on the base of hypercrosslinked polystyrene synthesized in the medium of subcritical water were used in order to obtain such oxygenates as stearic aldehyde and stearyl alcohol. The catalysts on the base of Pd (1 wt. %), Pt (1 wt. %), Ru (1 wt. %) and Ni (10 wt. %) were obtained. The resulting data analysis showed that Pt-containing catalyst was found to have high selectivity towards stearic aldehyde formation. Ni-containing catalyst, in turn, showed high selectivity towards the formation of n-octadecane (full hydrogenation product). The higher yield of stearyl alcohol was found to be for Ru and Pd catalysts. Thus, the synthesized polymer-based systems showed a good effectivity in the stearic acid conversion into the valuable compounds by hydrotreatment processes.
