MATHEMATICAL MODELING OF GLUCOSE ELECTRO-OXIDATION IN A SLIGHT ACID SOLUTION AT THE BIOFUEL CELL ANODE

In this paper, it was shown that the gold-modified carbon black (XC-72R + 20% Au) is able to electrooxidate the glucose under conditions, which are the most suitable for the work of the laccase-based electrode (pH = 4.5). It was established that oxygen does not participate the investigated process. The possible mechanism of the reaction was proposed. The maximum current density of 700 ?A cm-1 under the 0.4 V (Ag/AgCl) was received on the electrode with 1.5 mg of the catalyst loading within the solution, containing 125 mM glucose. Further increasing in electrode loading by catalyst or in glucose content of the solution did not cause the increasing of current density. The mathematical modelling of the process was carried out. In addition to changing the concentration of participants of the electrode reaction on time and on the thickness of the active layer, the model also takes into account the change of a number of gold catalyst active centres. An algorithm for solving equations of a mathematical model and a software module based on it were developed. As a result of the calculations, the kinetic constants of the reaction rates were determined. The adequacy of the developed mathematical model was tested for various catalyst loadings of the electrode and for various glucose concentrations of the solution.
