The base of the Northern Bohemian region is made up of the kratogen (old block) of the ?Bohemian Massif? that belongs to the so-called Hercynian (Variscan) province. Its development was tectonically terminated by hercynian orogenesis, which means by orogeny in the Palaeozoic Era (Carbon). Such regions are not very promising for the occurrence of geothermal energy, unlike geologically younger areas. But the heat flow is significant in some parts and consequently the area is called the ?Czech geothermal heat flow anomaly?. Deep boreholes mainly investigate coal deposits and show elevated groundwater temperatures. These are not hyper thermal sources, but the geothermal potential at higher water supply capacities and temperatures gives the possibility of utilization especially for heat pumps. Thanks to the cooperation between academics and students from the Faculty of the Environment at J. E. Purkyn? University in ?st? nad Labem (CZE), several localities with interesting and usable values of geothermal potential were observed. These are mainly the areas of the North Bohemian Coal Basin (now called the Most Basin) and the slopes and foothills of the Ore Mountains. An interesting part of the research was to observe temperature development of anthropogenic thermal waters that are created during underground coal combustion in western part of the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin. A detailed description of the research and its results is the subject of this contribution
