A brief description of analytical methods used for seismic analysis of underground structures is given. The methods take into account deformation of tunnel linings caused by seismic waves propagating transversely to the tunnel axis. Different approaches used now for seismic design are compared, examples of calculation are given. Advantages and disadvantages of the approaches are discussed. A new approach to seismic design of underground objects located on the shallow depth or near interface of different rocks is proposed. The main idea of the approach is taking into account influence of the waves reflected from the interface or refracted through it. It is assumed that the seismic waves affecting the tunnel are plane and harmonic and the wave direction is the most unfavourable for the underground structure. Stress state of the tunnel lining is estimated with help of analytical solution of quasi-static problem of elasticity theory. The problem is solved using theory of functions of complex variables. Examples of seismic analysis performed for a shallow tunnel with circular cross-section are given.
