Wastewater management in Poland has a large potential for growth, however, like other countries has to face the new challenges related to the implementation of the circular economy. Innovative wastewater and sewage sludge treatment technologies can bring ecological, social and economic benefits but need to be supported by multi-criteria analyses. This approach has to contend with complex problems which is an important advance in the field of sustainable development and circular economy.
This article aims to review existing various decision support systems (DSSs) and compare the key characteristics of selected applications, identifying the best alternatives and providing final recommendations for their improvement toward implementation of the circular economy in wastewater sector.
The article discusses the selected issues related to the development of DSSs for wastewater and sewage sludge management with special regard to Polish conditions. Conducted researches enable to characterize general conditions of a decision-making process related to the identification of the expected functionality of the system supporting environmental, spatial, logistical, technological and social analysis which can be used within this area.
In order to develop a reliable knowledge base through accumulating knowledge from previous studies the article presents the results of the structural and functional analysis based on applications review of different DDSs.
Therefore, this paper explores a systematic approach to developing decision support systems and presents a literature review of decision-making applications used in wastewater and sewage sludge management, offers a critical assessment of the current practices and provide suggestions for future works.
As a result, the assumptions for the development of the decision support model were presented, which take into account the integrated approach to the implementation of innovative technologies for wastewater management in line with the idea of the circular economy.
