In this study, the effect of physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of mine tailings on the microstructural, mechanical and durability properties of cemented paste backfill (CPB) samples prepared with normal Portland cement were investigated. Depending on the characteristics of the tailings, the difference in strength varied in the range of 6-22% between similar types of tailings. However, higher strength values about 61-86% were obtained when the fine material was removed from normal tailings. Porosity values also differed about 5% between similar types of tailings. However, about 19% less porous cemented paste backfill materials could be produced when coarse tailings were used. All CPB samples exhibited similar tendencies to acid and sulfate effects and also in strength development. Herein, it should be noted that the use of coarse tailings significantly reduced the acid and sulphate effects. This study also showed that each type of tailings shows a different interaction with binders.
