The cupola furnace is a most widely used foundry furnace for melting of cast iron. Besides main product, cast iron, also secondary products are formed in cupola furnace. They have a character of secondary raw materials, or industrial wastes. Under the laws applicable to waste management, the waste producer is obliged to ensure their disposal without negative environmental impacts. Typical, and main secondary product of cast iron production is a cupola furnace slag. Its occurrence is approximately from 40 to 80 kg per one ton of the cast iron. The cupola furnace slag originates from melting of gangue parts of metal bearing materials, slag forming additions and coke ash. The basic components of cupola slags are CaO, SiO2 a Al2O3. The cupola furnace slag properties are similar with blast furnace slag properties and this was the reason why cupola slag was used as a replacement of blast furnace slag. Cupola slag, which is cooled rapidly, after leaving the slag runner solidifies as glass, amorphous material. The slag that is cooled slowly, crystallizes. Possibilities of using cupola furnace slag are dependent on chemical, mineralogical and physical ? chemical properties, and this allow its utilisation in different fields of industry. The paper describes way of cupola furnace slag processing, the slag basic properties, and impact on next utilization.
