Waste disposal and management is one of the urgent issues faced by mankind at the current stage of development. Waste car tires pose a significant threat to the environment, which makes their efficient processing particularly important, as the volume of this type of waste generated each year worldwide is estimated at more than 10 million tons, of which 1 million tons are produced in Russia. The paper provides a description and calculations for a process system that can be used to dispose of waste tires by their steam gasification at 700°C and production of synthetic gas (syngas) that can be subsequently processed into a useful product ? methanol. The heat energy required for this process is obtained by oxidation of a 0.368 fraction of produced syngas. The steam required for gasification is generated in a heat-recovery boiler. Hydrogen sulfide and excess carbon dioxide are filtered out of syngas using monoethanolamine. Methanol is produced in a circulating reactor at 270°C and under pressure of 3 MPa over a copper-containing catalyst. Steam gasification of car tires is performed in a rotating cylindrical reactor equipped with devices to charge tires and discharge metal cord and char. The unit can process up to 457 kg of rubber per hour and yield up to 328 kg/h of methanol. Rate of rubber consumption per kilogram of methanol is 1.39. The calculations provided in this paper demonstrate the efficiency of this technology and its applicability.
