Lichens are widely used in studies of identification of various types of natural and anthropogenic pollution. As for mosses, they accumulate heavy metals and rare-earth elements. It makes them applicable for studies of a territory with long-term man-made pollution of the atmosphere. To evaluate the atmospheric air pollution in Tomsk and Prokopyevsk (Russia, Siberian region), the following two comparative analyzes were made in this work. Firstly, the elemental compositions of ash residues of epiphytic mosses and lichen were compared by means of an electron microscope with X-ray spectral analyzer. Secondly, the isotopic compositions of carbon ?13C and nitrogen ?15N in mosses and lichen were received using isotope mass spectrometry. Elemental composition of ash residues of epiphytic mosses and lichens has demonstrated the presence of 25 chemical elements in the analyzed lichens and mosses. The isotope composition of carbon has indicated on the effect of mine methane on the atmospheric air in Prokopyevsk. A comparison of the average values of the isotope composition of nitrogen for studied cities has shown that Tomsk has a bigger anthropogenic load in terms of emissions of nitrogen-containing compounds.
