Open-pit mining exploitation of useful mineral deposits involves occupancy and affectation of large areas of land, with negative effects on medium and long term. Although the impact of mining operations can not be avoided during the exploitation, it can be reduced and, after the cessation of the mining activities, it can be offset.
The impact of open-pit mining exploitation occurs primarily on the land by radically changes on the morphology and geomorphology of the land, by modification of the geotechnical characteristics of the rocks and by modification of hydrographical and hydrogeological regime, the cumulated impact of these changes causing the deterioration of quality of environment and life.
This paper aims to identify the main activities which takes place in the mining perimeters and highlight the impacts generated on the land and implicitly on the environment, providing numerous examples from the lignit open-pits from Rovinari Mining Basin. For impact identification, the impact network method is applied, a method that allows the study of cause-effect relationships and the identification of direct or indirect, primary or secondary impacts generated by an action.
