Toxic metal pollution of waste waters and soils is a major environmental problem, and most conventional remediation approaches do not provide acceptable solutions. The new technologies, phytoextraction, phytoaccumulation, and phytostabilization, make it possible to achieve an effective in-situ reduction of toxic load, especially by choosing suitable plants that have the desired properties.
From the rhizosphere of ruderal plants growing on the decontamination area of industrial waste in Ostrava, bacteria with presumed high resistance to lead, especially those belonging to the Pseudomonas genus, were isolated. The phytoextraction of lead using the plant Chenopodium album and its bioaccumulation capabilities, which were stimulated by two consortia of growth-promoting rhizobacterial isolates, were investigated. Accompanying experiments showed a positive effect, up to 3 times higher bioaccumulation efficiency of plants.
The results of this study can be subsequently used for effective phytoremediation of the anthropogenically contaminated environment.
