An exceptional occurrence can generally be regarded as a manifestation of risk. In order to handle it, it is necessary to have sufficient amount of information about the risk itself as well as about potential sources and means to deal with the situation it evokes and the preparedness of citizens. In Slovakia, it is mainly the risks of natural character which are, for the purposes of crisis management, evaluated based on a methodology from the year 1994. The ever-extending list of potential risks leads to the need of creating methodologies to evaluate risks and elaborate procedures to handle them. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the state of preparedness in Slovakia from the perspective of the analysis of security environment, integrated rescue system and from the perspective of preparedness of the citizens.
