The article presents scientific researches for level of soil contamination by deicing agents at the roadside close to the railway in the city of Arkhangelsk (Russia). The selected sections of the motor road are located above and below the railway embankment. The paper describes the procedure for sampling and determining content of the chemical elements in the roadside soil. We have estimated the content of the chemical elements in the composition of deicing agents in the roadside soil. We have examined and determined the effect of an obstacle in the form of a railway embankment, bedded layers, and layers of waterproof soils on the concentration of chemical elements in the roadside soil. The contamination level has been compared with the maximum permissible concentrations of the chemical elements. The assessment of the contamination level for human safety and service life of concrete and steel structures in the contaminated soil of roadsides has been given.
