The adoption and implementation of the strict provisions regarding the marine environment by the Maritime Maritime Organisation (IMO) resulted in imposing the limits for the SOx, NOx, and CO2 as the exhaust gas components. However, the limitations do not refer to fishing cutters/vessels. Given the number of the European fishing fleet, operating at the ECA areas, it should be expected that the limitations related to this group of vessels are implemented. In order to determine the degree of threat to the environment, the paper presents the research regarding the emission of the harmful exhaust gas components emitted by the fishing cutters of the Polish fleet operating in the Baltic Sea.
The author took into consideration the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrocarbons (HC). The research was conducted on 18 fishing cutters of the length from 15 m to 25 m. They were equipped with diesel engines for the main propulsion system. The research results may become applicable in order to develop a method to reduce and limit the emission, and to the evaluation of the effects of the said research in relation to the current emission.
