Cement is a silicone-based hydraulic binder, obtained by fine grinding of its components: clinker, limestone, gypsum, blast furnace slag, possibly grinding additives, but also other components such as kiln dust (CKD). The clinker is the most important component of cement, which is a granular material obtained by burning a powdery mixture of limestone and clay, with possible correction additives, in a furnace at 1450oC. The milling of clinker and other cement components is accomplished by means of ball mills with two or three compartments in which grinding bodies in contact with grinding material cause its fine grinding. The efficiency of grinding is appreciated by the fineness of the crushed material, the production capacity of the mill, the specific surface of the grist, the specific grinding energy consumption. The paper presents the results of some experimental determinations regarding the grinding of the Portland cement components in a cement plant from Romania. The grading and the average particle size of the clinker, limestone, gypsum, as well as the mixture of these components for the production of Portland cement are presented. At the same time, some theoretical calculus aspects of the grist specific surface and the average particle size of cement components, as well as the types of dimensional distribution equations of the of these components are presented. The distribution curves of the cement components dimensions, as well as the temperature evolution of the grounded material and the energy consumed in the process, are presented in the paper.
