The internal arch of the Eastern Carpathians is a well-known area of mineral water occurrence. The combination of the post-volcanic phenomena, in terms of CO2 emissions (mofette) and water bearing layers lead to the formation of numerous mineral water springs with several locations where the mineral water bottling started more than 200 years ago.
This study deals with the assessment of hydrogeological conditions, both hydrodynamic and hydrochemical, in such a particular area ? Lower Ciuc Basin. The main purpose of this research was the quantitative and qualitative protection of natural mineral water resources in the S?ncr?ieni area, in the frame of integrated management of multiple environmental pressures: andesite aggregates quarry, tailing pond of a former cinnabar exploitation.
The applied methodology included drilling of shallow exploration boreholes, pumping and injection tests, chemical analyses of collected samples from springs and exploitation/exploration boreholes, sampling and analysing for environmental isotopes.
Based on field activity results and integrating all the available data, a geological-hydrogeological conceptual model was developed as a basis for a further groundwater flow and transport model. The conceptual model was sought as compulsory to better understand the genesis of naturally carbonated water in the area, the groundwater ? surface water relationship and finally to approach the interferences between the volcaniclastic aquifer and the environmental stresses in the neighbourhood: the andesite quarry and the old tailing pond.
