EXPERIENCE IN ESTABLISHING SPECIALLY PROTECTED NATURAL AREAS IN CASE OF SMALL SCALE LANDSCAPES ? OBJECTIVE CRITERIA AND ARGUMENTS TO JUSTIFY

|
Conservation of the natural environment is top priority for all humanity. Thus, principal concern for the creation of protected natural areas with the aim of restricting human impact and biodiversity conservation is very important. As a result of comprehensive studies of the landscape monument «Steppe slopes and steppe woods on the Picha River» located in coniferous broad-leaved forests in the Mari El Republic (Russian Federation) was chosen for this purpose and full inventory of flora and fauna was conducted. It was found out that flora on the studied territory includes 335 species of vascular plants belonging to 222 genera and 68 families. Besides, there are 141 species of insects (65 families, 12 orders), 3 species of fish, 5 reptiles, 77 birds and 20 species of mammals on the studied area. 25 species of benthic invertebrates were found in the waters of the Picha River many of which are described for the first time in Mari El. Lists of rare species including two higher plants and 20 species of animals were drawn up. Basing on the analysis of the project`s achievements the key roles of geomorphology (limestones and marls outcrops) and relief (slope exposition) of the studied area in shaping of plant and animal species diversity was identified. The article gives necessary arguments which prove the importance of including the landscapes mentioned above in the list of establishing specially protected natural areas in the republic. Thus, the research application of the given investigation is the organization of the natural monument «Steppe slopes and steppe woods on the Picha River» the territory of which is only 35 hectare. It resulted in establishing this concrete protected natural area on the 22nd of May 2017 in the Mari El Republic (Russian Federation).
