The fundamental element to be ensured during laboratory tests is the control of the boundary conditions in terms of stress, strain and drainage conditions. The determination of the effective stresses is inherently associated with full saturation of soil specimen, as it allows to apply the Terzaghi's principle of effective stress. This paper describes the influence of partial saturation of soil on shear strength and deformation properties obtained from laboratory tests. The use of back pressure method, as the most effective method to achieve full saturation of test samples, is discussed only briefly and this study focuses on presentation of the results of triaxial tests carried out on undisturbed samples of overconsolidated medium plasticity clays tested in partial and full state of saturation. Tests in constrained conditions were carried out both in accordance with the standard procedure (ISO/TS 17892-5), where the soil specimen is submerged in water, as well as with the use of a back pressure system. The effect of partial saturation of soil on measured values of pore water pressure changes and shape of effective stress paths, and consequently on drained and undrained strength, is investigated on the basis of triaxial test results.
