The article considers a formal and functional description of international timber transportation logistical system as a distributing system. The formal representation of the international timber transportation process requires the consideration of a big number of factors affecting transportation. In addition, the transportation process takes place on the territory of several states and depends on the transport network significantly. In this regard, the use of the system analysis method will be most effective. A set-theoretical model that uses geographic information system data (GIS) will be constructed. This method allows taking into account the following: logistical system dynamics; territorial arrangement of industrial facilities and transport network (a GIS map, represented in the form of a weighted orgraph); a number of resources used (team of equipment, different loaders, personnel); resource cooperation; resources interaction with management structure (logistics department, marketing department, etc.); employment of resources, and so on. The set-theoretic model presented in the article is a part of the methodology, based on GIS technologies. It is used to improve the process of international timber transportation.
