Nonwoven geotextiles have been used as filter and drainage materials in geotechnical works in the past 40 years. Geotextiles are easy to install and they help to minimize clogging effect of drainage systems, however sometimes geotextiles may not drain water as effectively as was expected. Drainage and filter layers have to cope with more severe clogging mechanism (chemical, biological and physical). Clogging, which involves the accumulation of material within the void space of drainage medium, is a problem in drainage systems and decreases the effective porosity and functioning. The parameter that determinates the application usability of this product is water permeability. This paper presents the laboratory tests of water permeability normal to the plane of exploited nonwoven geotextile samples taken from earthfill dam in Poland. What is more, the hydraulic characteristic of the soil-geotextile system is also important so the results of permeability of soils are presented. The results obtained allowed to assess the water permeability changes of nonwoven geotextile due to clogging and to verify the effectiveness of applied geofilters.
