|
The so-called Karolina area is situated very close to the center of Ostrava - the third largest city in the Czech Republic. It is an area of several hectares on the main entrance to the city center. Urbanistically, it is one of the most attractive areas of the city. Due to the industrial past of Ostrava, this area has long been used as a coking plant in the past. Upon completion, the objects became a full-fledged brownfield with all the negatives associated with this phenomenon, including the environmental burden. Today it is an area with several hundred apartments, a large shopping center and other amenities. The article briefly describes the history of the site and focuses its transformation on the part of the city center, especially from the point of view of the preparation of the territory, its decontamination, and its subsequent use as well. Emphasis is placed on the economic aspects of both regeneration itself and subsequent operation, including the impact on the nearest central area.
