Nowadays the concepts of environmental ethics and environmental responsibility are mentioned more and more frequently in relation to the performance of companies. These notions can relate either to a person or to a company. Being environmentally responsible entails fulfilling one?s duty to protect the environment. Companies whose activities do harm to the environment should carry out this duty. The aim of this research is to teach students specialising in oil and gas engineering how to assess a company?s corporate social responsibility level. We suggest defining assessment criteria for a company?s environmental responsibility and utilizing these criteria in assessing the performance of a company?s activity. Analysis methods include the study of literature related to a company?s corporate social responsibility, and interviews with students specialising in oil and gas engineering and an employer of a company whose activity makes an impact on the environment. The following criteria for assessing a company?s environmental responsibility have been identified: the use of scientific research data in taking decisions on opening new projects; the amount of harmful substances released into the atmosphere as a result of a company?s activity; and the realization of social projects as a way to offset negative impacts. The following conclusions have been drawn: developing environmental ethics as part of future oil and gas specialists? competence is effective if it is carried out using real examples of companies? activity; applying the criteria mentioned above; and incorporating it into English language classes within the topic ?Environmental Issues of Oil and Gas Companies? Activity?.
