Globalization generates new demands, structures and systems requiring new skills and knowledge. Continuous changes and technological advancements in various industries in the country cannot but make the teaching staff of the universities consider new ways of improving the training system to ensure better acquisition of a foreign language. The paper deals with the trends, goals and tasks in Teaching English for Specific Purposes in Russian technical universities. ESP is a two sided process: English for developing students? speaking competence, and English as a tool to develop their professional knowledge and learn new technologies as soon as they are published in foreign sources, they are usually in English, that is development of their professional competences. The authors discuss the opportunities and advantages of interdisciplinary classrooms and extracurricular activities. As a language course, ESP, preparing of students for their careers, contributes in creating their critical thinking and knowledge of the industry advances in other countries. Properly selected texts delivering cutting edge information are able to motivate them and involve into spending more time on English. Learning situations are not limited to classroom practice, but extend to project-based learning and participation in the international conferences, reading additional literature to prepare for their major courses. The new challenges and goals are dependent on the curriculum and syllabus issues. And the syllabus is in close relation to writing new course books and mastering new teaching styles by the teaching staff. It is worth considering a new type of electronic textbook with numerous texts to study compiled taking into account students? professional interests, that can be added and updated with new materials every, say, half a year, or annually.
