Variable stresses where the load value varies between a maximum and a minimum
value, or varies the position in time, cause after accumulating a large number of load
cycles in those structures, the fatigue failure. Fatigue is characterized by failure on
values of the applied stress from the load cycles, below the material yield, values which
in case of static stress would not have caused problems. Knowing that the variable
stressed structures are sensitive to stress concentrators, the paper aims is to highlight the influence of the two rehabilitation techniques techniques ? weld toe grinding? and
?WIG remelting weld toe? in order to reduce the stress concentrators. The rehabilitation
techniques ? weld toe grinding? and ?WIG remelting weld toe?, will increase the radius
conection between filler and base material and will have a good influence on the
behavior of variable tensile test of cruciform fillet welded specimen. In the paper,
fatigue will be tested, durability curves will be raised using statistical methods and
specialized programs, and fatigue lifetimes will be determinde by applying those two
rehabilitation techniques. Also, in this paper, single and multiple rows welded joints,
reinforced with additional welded rows have been chosen to study. The comparison is
justified because on the one hand single rows welded joints are the most common and
on the other hand the welded joints reinforced with additional welded rows are often
used in the case of fatigue stressed welded structures due to the favorable heat
treatment effect between the welding layers. In fact, the additional reinforcing welded
layers, have a stress relief action on the adjacent layers, by proper dosing of the linear
energy at welding and by a proper overlapping.
