Austenitic stainless steel biomedical grade type 316L, is the most used metallic
biomaterials for biomedical applications due to their excellent corrosion resistance,
good biocompatibility, low price, availability, easy processing and high strength. Due to
these favorable combination of mechanical properties, satisfactory biocompatibility and
relatively low cost, in comparison with other metallic biomaterials, 316L stainless steel
has been successfully applied in medicine. In dentistry it is used in a variety of
applications such as: temporary crowns, sterilized instruments, arch wires, material in
brackets, etc. However the corrosion mechanism of 316 L stainless steel in humanrelevant biological conditions is not fully understood. The aim of this study is to
evaluate the corrosion behavior of 316L stainless steel in two solutions: phosphate
buffered saline solution with pH of 7.32 simulating conditions of healthy human body,
and phosphate buffered saline solution pH of 5.12 with the addition of hydrogen
peroxide (0.030 mol/L, 0.15 mol/L) simulating the inflammatory state. In situ
electrochemical measurements such as: open circuit potential (OCP) and
electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were performed to monitor the corrosion process. The electrochemical results conclude that the addition of hydrogen peroxide in phosphate buffered saline decrease the corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel. The optical images of the tested samples have been observed before and after corrosion experiments using an optical microscope (Optika) in order to understand the nature of corrosion and the damages produced by this process.
